The Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (FGSS) program at Cornell’s College of Arts and Sciences is an interdisciplinary degree examining how gender and sexuality intersect with culture, society, and politics. Founded in 1972 as Women’s Studies, FGSS explores the complex relationships among sexuality, race, class, age, ethnicity, and other aspects of identity, focusing explicitly on systems of power and inequality. The curriculum is interdisciplinary, including perspectives from anthropology, theatre, literature, sociology, government, and science & technology studies. Students build critical thinking, analytic writing, and cultural competencies, preparing for careers in law, medicine, public policy, the arts, transnational advocacy, research, and activism. The program includes required courses in feminist theory, global perspectives, intersecting structures of oppression, LGBTQ studies, and culminates with a senior seminar.
