The Linguistics major at Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences offers a scientific study of human language. Students learn about the structural properties of language (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics), language acquisition, sociolinguistics, and computational or historical linguistics. The curriculum requires ten linguistics courses (minimum 37 credits) and two ancillary skills courses selected to complement students' particular interests. Foundational courses include Introduction to Linguistics, Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology, Introduction to Syntax and Semantics, and Introduction to Historical Linguistics. Students can tailor their study with electives and ancillary skills in areas like statistics, computer programming, logic, advanced language study, or teaching methodology. The degree prepares graduates for graduate study in linguistics, law, or computer science, and careers in fields such as technology and education.
