Cornell Engineering's Bachelor of Science in Independent Major (IM) enables students to pursue a highly customized, interdisciplinary engineering program when their interests cannot be met by existing majors. Each student creates a coherent curriculum in consultation with two faculty advisors, comprising a Primary Area (minimum 32 credits, any engineering department except Computer Science) and a Secondary Area (minimum 16 credits, typically outside engineering but may be in another field). All courses in these areas must be taken for a letter grade; only one course below C- allowed across both areas. Students must also fulfill the requirements of the College of Engineering Common Curriculum. This major is not ABET-accredited and may have licensing implications for professional engineering practice or certain graduate programs. Students usually apply by the end of sophomore year, submitting a statement of purpose, learning objectives, and a detailed course plan for all semesters.
