This program provides comprehensive education in the theory and practice of bioinformatics and computational biology. Students study biological problem contexts, mathematical and statistical foundations, computational approaches, data structures, algorithms, genomics, machine learning, and ethical/legal considerations. The curriculum is highly interdisciplinary, comprising core courses in probability and statistics, data science, molecular biology, genomics, gene expression analysis, sequence alignment, and a capstone or research elective. Designed for students aiming to work in cutting-edge research or industry, the MS is a non-thesis program offered by the Science Academy at the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences, University of Maryland College Park, with evening instruction to accommodate working professionals.
