The Master of Community Planning (M.C.P.) at University of Maryland College Park, offered by the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, is a professional graduate degree accredited by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning and the American Planning Association. The program equips students to become planning practitioners who are generalists with a specialization, focusing on the political, institutional, and social contexts of planning practice. The curriculum (48 credits) comprises core courses covering foundations in city and regional planning, research methods, planning process, planning history and theory, and planning economics; one area of specialization (9 credits) in subjects such as community development, housing, economic development, international planning, land use/environmental planning, social planning, historic preservation, or transportation planning; electives (9 credits); and a required planning studio and internship. The program can be completed full-time in two years, or part-time in up to five years. It accepts up to 9 credits from other graduate programs. The capstone project is required in place of a thesis.
