The MS in Couple and Family Therapy at the University of Maryland College Park prepares students for licensure as Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs). The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) of the AAMFT. Students undertake comprehensive coursework covering family systems, clinical theory, ethics, multicultural issues, and research methods, and must also complete extensive supervised clinical training, accumulating at least 400 face-to-face client contact hours (250 must be relational) and 100 hours of supervision. Graduates are eligible for licensure in Maryland and most other states, and are equipped for practice in diverse professional settings including mental health clinics, private practice, community agencies, research, and policy analysis. The program is highly portable and provides solid preparation for the National Licensing Examination in Marriage and Family Therapy.
