The Bachelor of Arts in American Studies at the University of Maryland College Park is an interdisciplinary program that explores U.S. society, identity, and culture. The curriculum emphasizes the analysis of the cultures of everyday life, cultural constructions of identity and difference, and a transnational/global perspective. Students study historically overlooked groups through the lenses of race, class, gender, sexuality, disability, and religion. The program encourages developing critical thinking, research, communication, and analytical skills. Majors customize their degree via a focus area chosen from other departments or a designed focus with an advisor, and opportunities for internships, research, study abroad, and departmental honors are available. Graduates are well prepared for careers in law, government, media, non-profit and social justice organizations, education, business, and for graduate studies.
