The Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at the College of Arts and Humanities, University of Maryland College Park, provides a rigorous investigation into the foundations of reality, knowledge, and value. Students study both historical and contemporary philosophical figures and topics, developing skills in rational argumentation, problem-solving, and the clear expression of complex ideas. The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for careers requiring critical thinking, such as law, public policy, education, health, and business. Students engage in small classes with faculty who specialize in diverse subfields and have opportunities for experiential learning, internships, and participation in the Philosophy Club. The major requires at least 36 credit hours (twelve courses) in philosophy, which must include at least six courses at the 300-level or above (two at the 400-level or above), at least one course in logic, and at least two upper-level courses in the history of pre-twentieth-century philosophy.
