The Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland College Park is the only undergraduate program of its kind accredited by ABET. It focuses on applying scientific and engineering principles to fire safety analysis, fire hazard mitigation, suppression, and the protection of people, structures, commodities, and the environment. The curriculum provides a foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, materials science, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and combustion with a specific emphasis on fire phenomena. Students gain laboratory and design experience, particularly in alarm and suppression systems, smoke control, and safety codes and standards. The program includes a senior capstone project where students integrate their learning to create practical fire protection solutions. Starting Fall 2025, degree requirements may be completed online with department policy compliance; online courses replicate the in-person program's rigor and requirements, giving global accessibility.
