The Master of Science in Geochemistry at Caltech’s Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences provides a rigorous background in geochemistry and related subfields. The curriculum is designed for graduate students engaging in broad training and interdisciplinary research, covering subjects such as petrology/mineralogy, isotope geochemistry, cosmochemistry, water and atmospheric chemistry, and biogeochemistry. Modern laboratory facilities and opportunities for field work are integral. Most master’s degrees in geochemistry at Caltech are conferred en route to the PhD, rather than as a stand-alone program. Students must complete at least 135 graduate units (including at least 72 in coursework), satisfy requirements across four subdisciplines, and demonstrate proficiency in chemistry and mathematics at the advanced undergraduate level. The division encourages applicants from diverse academic backgrounds in science and engineering.
