The Master of Arts in History at UC San Diego's School of Arts & Humanities is designed to introduce students to advanced skills in historical research and critical engagement with historical debates and approaches. The program includes nine four-unit courses (36 units), typically distributed within a chosen field of concentration. Students also complete a one-hour oral examination at the end of their program. The curriculum is tailored for those intending to pursue a PhD in history; a terminal MA is not the main focus of the department. The program prepares students for careers in academia, scholarship, or for further doctoral study, covering a broad array of research fields and offering a research seminar requirement, field colloquia, and graduate-level coursework in consultation with faculty.
