The MFA Program in Writing at the University of California San Diego's School of Arts & Humanities is a selective three-year, full-time residency that foregrounds the interconnectedness of literary arts practice. Emphasizing both creative and critical writing across genres, students engage in rigorous coursework, cross-genre writing workshops, and interdisciplinary seminars with opportunities to explore the intersection of literature, art, and broader cultural contexts. The small program cohort (4-8 students admitted annually) allows for close mentorship and community. The curriculum culminates in a substantial final manuscript (fiction, poetry, or cross-genre work), public readings, and a comprehensive oral defense before a committee. Students frequently participate in teaching and are eligible for scholarships and assistantships.
