The Philosophy Department at UC San Diego, housed within the School of Arts & Humanities, offers both MA and PhD degrees. The graduate program covers a broad and interdisciplinary spectrum (including philosophy of science, ethics, mind, language, and history of philosophy). While the department does not admit students directly to a terminal MA program, a Master of Arts in Philosophy may be earned en route to the PhD by completing eight distribution seminars (with no more than four from any of five core areas) and a master's research paper approved by two faculty. The department is nationally recognized (ranked 16th in the US in 2025) and has particular strengths in Kant studies, philosophy of action, philosophy of physics, and more. Research and mentorship opportunities are abundant, with strong faculty support and a diverse graduate student body.
