The MS in Materials Science and Engineering at UC San Diego's Jacobs School of Engineering is an interdisciplinary program focused on the structure, properties, and applications of advanced materials. Students receive training across physical sciences, chemistry, physics, and multiple fields of engineering, benefiting from collaboration with several departments. The program is tailored to equip students with advanced knowledge in materials characterization, microstructure-property relationships, design of novel materials for applications ranging from high-tech electronics and optoelectronics to biomaterials and energy devices. Students can choose between a Thesis Plan (research-focused) and a Comprehensive Examination Plan (coursework-focused). A total of 36 units are required. The typical program duration is 18–24 months full time. The program is suited for students with a background in materials science, physical sciences, engineering, chemistry, or related disciplines.
