The Microbiology major at UC San Diego’s School of Biological Sciences covers a wide range of topics, from human health and disease to biotechnology, synthetic biology, microbiomes, and environmental roles of microbes. Students develop foundational knowledge in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and general microbiology, and can tailor their studies for emphasis in general, medical, biotechnological, or environmental microbiology. The program prepares graduates for careers in healthcare, clinical diagnostics, food microbiology, environmental testing, public policy, biotechnology, bioenergy, and biomanufacturing, or for further study in graduate health and science programs.
