The Communication BA program at UC San Diego, offered by the School of Social Sciences, provides a liberal arts education that draws from both the social sciences (anthropology, psychology, sociology, political science) and the humanities/fine arts (theatre, literature, visual arts). Students learn about the role of technologies and institutions of communication in shaping human experience, and develop critical awareness of communicative forces in society. The program focuses on theory, history, and qualitative research rather than technical training in fields like journalism or advertising. The major includes core and elective courses exploring topics such as media, globalization, power, culture, language, and identity. Graduates gain a solid foundation for further graduate study or work in communication-related professions including education, public service, and media.
