The Hybrid Online Master of Science in Forestry at Michigan State University is a professional graduate program designed for individuals holding a bachelor's degree (BA or BS) in a field other than forestry who wish to transition into a forestry career. The program offers a blend of asynchronous online coursework with two required intensive in-person field sessions (each nine days). Students engage in guided practical exercises and projects in forests near their location, acquiring skills in sustainable forest management, ecology, economics, and policy, while balancing other professional or personal commitments. The curriculum covers topics like tree identification, silviculture, GIS, forest economics, and managing forests for conservation, timber, bioproducts, and carbon sequestration. Graduates prepare for roles such as forester, silviculturist, forest restoration manager, forestry consultant, carbon analyst, and forest certification specialist. The program is in candidacy for accreditation by the Society of American Foresters (SAF) and provides fellowship funds for professional development.
