The BA in Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy at James Madison College, Michigan State University, is a rigorous interdisciplinary program focused on the philosophical and historical foundations of liberal constitutional democracy. Core themes include foundational works of political theory from ancient to modern times, analysis of competing values in politics, and exploration of the practical application of theoretical principles in American and global contexts. Students engage with canonical political theories as well as critical perspectives, including Black political thought and radical critiques of democracy. The curriculum enables close faculty engagement, small class sizes, and flexibility for dual majors. Graduates are equipped for careers in law, academia, politics, policy, and public service.
