The Environmental Biology/Microbiology program at Lyman Briggs College, Michigan State University, is designed to prepare students for careers and advanced study in fields related to environmental protection, remediation, and research involving microbiology and environmental issues. The curriculum covers soil fertility, water purity, food safety, and other critical areas where microorganisms play a key role. Students gain a broad education in both environmental biology and microbiology, with strong foundations for professional work or graduate studies. Graduates are eligible to apply for certification with the National Registry of Microbiologists of the American Society for Microbiology. The major is interdisciplinary, combining courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics, and emphasizes both fundamental and applied aspects of microbial sciences as they relate to the environment. Students may also pursue relevant minors, such as Bioethics, and are encouraged to participate in research and experiential learning.
