NYU College of Arts & Science’s joint major in Anthropology and Linguistics combines the four-field approach of anthropology (cultural, linguistic, biological, and archaeological) with the scientific study of human language, including syntax, morphology, semantics, phonetics, phonology, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics. Faculty research spans discourse analysis, language socialization, primate and human origins, urban sociolinguistics, languages in contact, and computer analogies of syntactic processes, providing students an integrated grounding in human societies, culture, and language structure and use.
