NYU College of Arts & Science’s Religious Studies BA examines religion as a central aspect of social life using multiple methods—psychological, sociological, anthropological, philosophical, historical, legal, and literary—while also treating “religion” itself as a concept shaped within the human and social sciences. Students study religions empirically across times and places using textual, visual, and audio sources, and use lived religious practices as a lens to analyze realms such as gender and sexuality, race, nation-state, violence, memory, ethics, emotions, politics, economy, power, art, literature, and media. The department emphasizes academic analysis rather than promotion of particular beliefs and is closely affiliated with NYU’s Center for Religion and Media. The curriculum includes core theory/methods and advanced seminars (e.g., RELST‑UA 1 Theories & Methods; RELST‑UA 15 Advanced Seminar) with diverse electives (e.g., Sex, Gender & the Bible; Religion, Art, and the City; Gods and Profits: Religion and Capitalism). Honors is available to majors with a 3.65+ GPA via an 8‑credit senior thesis.
