This interdisciplinary BA, housed in NYU’s Department of Social and Cultural Analysis (SCA), examines cities and metropolitan regions in relation to suburban and rural contexts, using the New York City area as a laboratory for coursework, internships, and research on social institutions, policy, demographics, and infrastructure. As of February 1, 2025, the major is not accepting new declarations and is slated for formal discontinuation; students are encouraged to consider new joint Urban Studies majors with Anthropology, History, Social and Cultural Analysis, or Sociology. Already-declared students may complete the program. The curriculum typically totals 128 credits and includes SCA coursework and an Advanced Research Seminar (SCA-UA 90). Accelerated BA/MPA and BA/MUP pathways exist with the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.
