NYU Arts & Science’s Comparative Literature BA is designed for students seeking an intercultural, cross-linguistic, and theoretically informed study of literature. The major emphasizes seminar-format courses, intensive faculty interaction, and coverage across European, Anglo-American, African/African American, Slavic, Latin American/Caribbean, Chinese, South Asian, and Middle Eastern literatures, with frequent engagement with Continental philosophy and critical theory. Students choose between two tracks—Literature, and Literary & Cultural Studies—and may integrate coursework from related fields such as anthropology, philosophy, psychoanalysis, gender and race studies, history, political theory, religion, art, music, and film/media. Advising is provided by the Director of Undergraduate Studies; qualified students may pursue an honors thesis. Alumni pathways include graduate study and careers in academia, law, medicine, human rights, translation, international relations, education, publishing, journalism, arts, media, film, and performance.
