NYU Arts & Science’s Comparative Literature BA is designed for students seeking an intercultural, cross-linguistic, and theoretically informed study of literature. The major emphasizes seminar-format courses, intensive faculty interaction, and coverage across European, Anglo-American, African/African American, Slavic, Latin American/Caribbean, Chinese, South Asian, and Middle Eastern literatures, with frequent engagement with Continental philosophy and critical theory. Students choose between two tracks—Literature, and Literary & Cultural Studies—and may integrate coursework from related fields such as anthropology, philosophy, psychoanalysis, gender and race studies, history, political theory, religion, art, music, and film/media. Advising is provided by the Director of Undergraduate Studies; qualified students may pursue an honors thesis.
