NYU Tisch Performance Studies examines performance broadly—on the stage, page, screen, in galleries and city streets, online, and in everyday life—asking not only “what is performance?” but “what does performance do?” Students engage an interdisciplinary curriculum that combines theory and method to document, theorize, and analyze embodied practices and events across theater, dance, music/sound, visual/installation art, activism, and digital contexts. The department, founded in 1980 as the first of its kind and ranked #1 for doctoral programs in Theater and Performance Studies by the National Research Council, offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. programs taught by internationally recognized faculty, drawing on feminist, queer, and trans theory and race and ethnicity studies. Undergraduate courses emphasize critical inquiry and New York City’s cultural landscape, with offerings such as “Performance Studies: An Introduction,” “Performance of the City,” and other rotating topics each term.
