The Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science offered by the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio State University focuses on the mathematical and statistical foundations of designing, financing, and operating insurance, pension, and benefit plans. Students gain a background in probability and statistics, interest theory, financial economics, life contingencies, loss models, and practical actuarial applications. The curriculum prepares students to take up to five professional actuarial exams, creating a competitive advantage for entry into the profession. The majority of graduates pass at least one exam before graduation, and many pass two or more. In addition to core mathematics and statistics, coursework includes economics, accounting, finance, and computer science. Students join as pre-majors and are admitted to the major upon meeting GPA and coursework requirements or passing an actuarial exam. Active professional development is supported by an actuarial club, internships, seminars, and industry networking.
