The Bachelor of Arts in African American and African Studies at Ohio State University's College of Arts and Sciences provides an interdisciplinary education on the social, political, psychological, historical, and intellectual experiences of Africans and their descendants globally. The program encourages a critical examination of the role of race in society through the lens of arts, humanities, and social sciences, and promotes an intersectional perspective on issues of class, gender, sexuality, nation, and ethnicity. Students are required to complete core courses such as 'Major Readings in African American and African Studies,' 'Global Perspectives on the African Diaspora,' and 'Theorizing Race and Ethnicity,' alongside electives and possible concentrations in areas like Representation and Performance, Social Issues & Community Development, Histories & Cultures, and Race, Ethnicity, Gender & Sexuality. The major prepares students for careers in higher education, law, public health, urban planning, social work, and other fields valuing broad, intersectional perspectives. Opportunities for service learning, study abroad in Southern Africa, and community engagement are also available.
