The Bachelor of Arts in Portuguese at Ohio State University is offered by the College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Spanish and Portuguese. The program provides a strong foundation in Portuguese language, emphasizes the study of literary works, and develops cultural competency in the Lusophone world (Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, and other African nations). The curriculum requires at least 30 credit hours distributed across advanced language and linguistics, literature and culture, and electives. Students without prior experience in Portuguese can start at the introductory level. Spanish speakers may enter through specialized accelerated courses. The program encourages study abroad in Portugal and Brazil, and offers vibrant extracurricular opportunities including the Spanish and Portuguese Club and the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society. Career prospects for graduates include positions in business, government, banking, public relations, programming, healthcare, social work, and diplomacy.
