The Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science at Ohio State University's School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences prepares students for careers as certified medical laboratory scientists. Students learn to perform and interpret clinical laboratory tests essential in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. The curriculum covers five core disciplines: chemistry, immunology, hematology, transfusion medicine, and microbiology. The program consists of general education and prerequisite courses during the first two years, followed by two years of upper-level professional coursework. In the certification track, students complete four semesters of professional courses and a six-week clinical internship in the final semester. Graduates qualify for the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification exam. Alternative 'medical science' tracks without certification are available for those planning to enter related graduate/professional programs.
