The Bachelor of Arts in Law, Letters, and Society (LLSO) at the University of Chicago is a selective interdisciplinary undergraduate major within the Division of the Social Sciences. The program is designed to develop strong analytical skills and provide students with tools for the critical examination of law, understood both as a tool of social organization and as a field formed by rhetorical and empirical traditions. Students design individualized focus fields, combining required core courses, electives, and interdisciplinary research, culminating in a substantial BA thesis supervised by faculty. This thesis typically ranges from 8,000 to 12,000 words and demonstrates the student's ability to carry out original research on a topic about law. Throughout the four-year program, students explore law from the perspectives of letters and society, preparing them for law, government, academia, journalism, business, and other fields.
