This program combines American Studies and History in an interdisciplinary learning community at the University of Sussex. You will study themes ranging from Civil War literature and the Civil Rights movement to American culture, film, literature, and music. A distinctive aspect of this degree is the integrated year abroad, during which students spend one year at a partner university in the United States or Canada (e.g., UC Berkeley, UCLA, Georgetown). This experience develops practical skills, cross-cultural understanding, and academic breadth. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, workshops, and practicals, with all assessment by coursework.
