The Social Justice and International Studies in Education (SJI) specialization at the University of Alberta focuses on the theoretical, philosophical, and ideological foundations of education, as well as the social and cultural contexts within which education takes place. Drawing significantly from philosophy, history, sociology, anthropology, political science, and cultural studies, the program examines issues such as social and economic inequality, gender and race relations, multiculturalism, sexual orientation, citizenship, development, globalization, coloniality, and social movements. The program prepares graduates for leadership in education, policy, advocacy, and research relating to global and local challenges in education, with a strong emphasis on critical theory and social analysis. Students may choose a course-based or thesis-based route, both requiring key core and elective courses, and all students must satisfy academic ethics and professional development requirements.
