The Master of Arts in Community Engagement (MACE) at the University of Alberta’s School of Public Health is an interdisciplinary graduate program designed to prepare students for reflective, research-based, and practical community engagement—in government, industry, the not-for-profit sector, and academia. Students examine engagement theories, historical and contemporary perspectives, community-based research methods, project management, policy development, and culturally responsive practices. The program offers both thesis- and course-based pathways. Practical experience is embedded through either a practicum (thesis-based) or a capstone applied research project (course-based), with emphasis on principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization.
