The Bachelor of Arts (General, Honors) program at the University of Alberta within the College of Social Sciences and Humanities (Faculty of Arts) offers advanced undergraduate education focused on in-depth, specialized study in a specific discipline of the humanities or social sciences. The Honors stream is designed for high-achieving students, providing a rigorous, research-oriented curriculum—including opportunities for a thesis or capstone project—and is distinguished from the regular BA by offering greater depth within a major, closer faculty mentorship, and superior preparation for graduate studies or specialized careers. Admission is competitive and requires sustained academic excellence and the fulfillment of major-specific requirements. Students admitted from high school begin in a Foundation Year and internally apply for their major after completing a minimum of 24 units. Most BA Honors programs require 120 units, including at least 63 in Faculty of Arts courses, and involve both coursework and, in many cases, an Honors essay or thesis project.
