The Bachelor of Arts in History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture (HADVC) at the University of Alberta is an interdisciplinary program that explores the visual world and its social, historical, and cultural meanings. Students engage critically with artistic and design traditions across periods, regions, and media—from Renaissance and contemporary art to architecture, performance, and digital cultures. The curriculum teaches students to analyze images and objects, consider issues such as globalization and technology, and cultivate research, critical reading, and visual literacy skills. Graduates are prepared for careers in art galleries, museums, publishing, cultural policy, and related fields, and have strong transferable skills in analysis, communication, and creative inquiry.
