The MA in Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Arts offers an interdisciplinary approach with three streams: Applied Linguistics (focusing on language acquisition, teaching, and sociolinguistics), Literature and/or Film Studies (centering on French, German, and Spanish literary and cinematic works), and Transcultural Studies (exploring cultural complexity in regions where French, Arabic, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish are spoken). The program emphasizes advanced research, critical and theoretical expertise, and the acquisition of broad cultural literacy. Graduates are equipped for professions in post-secondary education, cultural organizations, translation, government, media, and related fields. Core requirements include courses in language pedagogy and research methodology, as well as a capstone essay and exam. The MA can be completed as either a course-based or thesis-based program.
