The Master of Design Research (MDR), formerly known as the Master of Environmental Design (MEDes), is a post-professional, research-intensive, thesis-based program offered by the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (SAPL) at the University of Calgary. Designed for recent graduates of professional programs in architecture, planning, or landscape architecture, the MDR allows students to develop an area of specialization within a design research context. The curriculum emphasizes thesis-driven inquiry and targeted coursework in design research methods, writing, and innovation, plus elective study. Admission is competitive and requires a strong match between applicant and faculty supervisor. The program prepares graduates for advanced roles in research and practice, building expertise beyond the initial professional degree.
