The BA in Ancient and Medieval History at the University of Calgary explores pre-modern societies across the globe, investigating political, economic, and social developments from the 4th to the 15th century CE. Students study the foundations laid by civilizations such as Ancient Greece and Rome, the European Middle Ages, ancient Near East, as well as societies in southern and eastern Asia, Africa, and the Americas. The program equips graduates with research, analytical, and communication skills applicable to careers in public service, business, non-profit sectors, or as preparation for graduate studies in law, education, or other professional fields. Coursework builds an understanding of how societies evolve and interact across time and cultural boundaries. Note: Admission to this major is paused for Fall 2025 and onward due to a curriculum renewal process in the Department of Classics and Religion. Current students can complete the program, but new admissions are not available for Fall 2025 entry.
