The Bachelor of Arts in French at McMaster University immerses students in one of Canada's official languages and explores the cultural, literary, and linguistic traditions of the French-speaking world. The program emphasizes both advanced language proficiency and broad interdisciplinary perspectives through courses that cover Franco-European, Québécois, Franco-Canadian, Franco-African, Caribbean literature and cultures, and translation. The language of instruction is French, and students benefit from the support of native-speaking language assistants. Opportunities for international exchange in France or Quebec during the third year are available. Entry to the French major is after completion of first-year studies in the Faculty of Humanities. Students can begin with advanced or intensive beginner courses, and placement is adapted to individual proficiency.
