The Master of Laws (LLM) in Law and Society at the University of Victoria Faculty of Law is a research-focused, thesis-based program. It emphasizes advanced interdisciplinary research at the intersection of law and society. Students work closely with both faculty supervisors from the law faculty and an external faculty member from another discipline, ranging from anthropology and political science to Indigenous governance and visual arts. The curriculum combines legal theory, research methodology, and electives from allied disciplines, culminating in the completion of an original thesis. UVic Law is well known for its commitment to social justice, Indigenous legal resurgence, environmental law, and critical legal theory. The program does not allow graduates to practice law in Canada; it is a research degree.
