Dalhousie University's Bachelor of Arts in German, offered by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, provides a deep understanding of the German language and its cultural, literary, and philosophical contexts. The curriculum covers language acquisition, literature, and thought/philosophy, using both German and English as mediums of instruction in some courses. Students can choose to major or pursue honours in German, with the option to combine with another discipline. A significant feature of the program is the opportunity to spend up to one year studying at a university in a German-speaking country and obtaining credit towards the Dalhousie degree. The program encourages exploration of influential German thinkers—such as Luther, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Freud, and Heidegger—and their impact on modern subjects such as political science, philosophy, and the arts. Graduates gain skills highly valued in international fields. Course offerings include language at all levels, German literature and film, fairy tales, and advanced seminars in German philosophy and culture.
