Dalhousie University's Bachelor of Science in Therapeutic Recreation provides students with comprehensive training to design and implement purposeful recreational programs to enhance quality of life for people with disabilities, illnesses, or limitations. The program combines classroom study in leisure, psychology, anatomy, physiology, leadership, and sociology, with specialized therapeutic recreation courses. In the final year, students complete a 16-week internship under a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). Graduates are prepared to sit for the NCTRC exam to become certified specialists and typically find employment in mental health, addictions, rehabilitation, community centres, long-term care, and outdoor recreation environments. An honours option is available for those interested in research. The curriculum is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, and cohorts are kept small to ensure close faculty-student mentoring.
