The Master of Social Work (MSW) – Social Justice and Diversity field at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto, prepares students for advanced professional practice in environments marked by social inequalities. This field of study emphasizes the development of critical thinking and practical skills needed to address issues of inequality, exclusion, and marginalization within diverse populations. The curriculum incorporates structural, intersectional feminist, antiracist, Indigenous, LGBTQ2S+, and anti-oppressive theories and practices. Core competencies include critical practice, reflexivity, policy advocacy, community mobilization, and research proposal writing. Students gain expertise through required courses such as Social Work Policy Practice and Advocacy in the Context of Neoliberal Globalization, Theoretical Approaches to Defining Social Injustice, Diversity, Access and Equity in Social Work Practice, and a practicum experience. The program is available in both a two-year format (for students without a BSW) and in an advanced standing option (requiring a BSW).
