The Master of Sacred Music (MSMus) at Emmanuel College, Toronto School of Theology (University of Toronto), is a graduate program designed to equip students from any Christian tradition with skills for leading music in worship. The curriculum integrates musical training (including specialty areas like organ, piano, voice, conducting, composition, and guitar) with theological foundations, preparing graduates to serve as music leaders in congregations and religious organizations. The program requires 20 credits split between Emmanuel College and the Faculty of Music, plus an integrative practicum and oral examination assessing vocational and theo-musical competence. Learning outcomes include informed performance practice, foundational Christian theological knowledge, and leadership skills for religious musical ministry. Entry is in the fall semester only and the program can be pursued part-time, with a maximum period of eight years for completion.
