The BASc in Geological Engineering at the University of Waterloo integrates geosciences with civil engineering and extensive hands-on fieldwork. This is one of only two accredited Geological Engineering programs in Ontario. Students learn to solve real-world problems involving earth materials and processes, such as energy and mineral resource development, infrastructure design (dams, pipelines, tunnels), risk assessment for landslides and earthquakes, and remediation of groundwater contamination. The curriculum combines foundational courses in engineering, chemistry, physics, and mathematics in the first year, followed by advanced courses in geology, geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology, geophysics, and field courses. Students can specialize in Geology, Hydrogeology, or Soil, Rock & Structures, and have access to options and specializations unique to Waterloo Engineering. The program features a strong co-op component, with graduates eligible for both Professional Engineer and Professional Geoscientist licensure.
