The Bachelor of Environmental Studies (Geomatics) at the University of Waterloo Faculty of Environment combines computer science techniques with geographic and environmental data analysis. Students learn to use tools such as remote sensing, GIS, computer mapping, and GPS to interpret and analyze spatial data for solving complex geographic and environmental problems. The program includes foundational courses in geospatial data science, geography, environmental studies, English, and math in the first year. Later years focus extensively on geography and geomatics. Experiential learning is emphasized through co-op (paid work placements). Graduates are prepared for careers in government, business, environmental consulting, and research, including positions involving natural hazard preparation, crime mapping, demographic studies, and transportation planning. Waterloo is recognized as a Canadian leader in remote sensing and geomatics education.
